Above is a portrait (in pastels) belonging to my Grandmother. I remember it hanging at the bottom of the stairs when I was growing up, but more recently it has lived in a cupboard. Unfortunately despite it being in the family for a long time my Grandmother doesn't know who it is. The fact it has been kept in the family, suggests that it might be an ancestor but we have no idea who he is.
What struck me was the costume, it seemed remarkably similar to many of the illustrations I have been looking at; note the shirt ruffle protruding from the waistcoat.
